Guide: 7 watches to start the watch interest with

Text: Aleksandar Mladenovic

If you are reading this guide you are probably in the starting blocks for your first ”real” watch purchase. It is not entirely easy as a newcomer in this fantastic world to know what to buy. Automatic? Manual? Quartz? Size? Many questions to answer. We at Eqotime have made it a little easier to navigate the jungle by listing 7 watches we think are perfect to start the interest with.

Baltic MR01 Salmon

Seiko 5 Sports GMT

Historically the somewhat legendary Seiko SKX007 has been a stock tip from my side when people have asked what they should buy as a first watch. An automatic diver in a good size for a couple of thousand kronor, what can go wrong really? It was also the watch that kickstarted my personal interest and that made me really bitten.

Recently Seiko released a GMT in the same package with a list price of 4,998kr which is somewhat revolutionary. So you get an automatic watch, on a bracelet, that shows an extra time zone for just under 5,000kr.

We wrote an article about the models earlier this year that you can read here.

Baltic MR01

Baltic is a French micro manufacturer that has become very popular over the years. Good watches in classic, vintage-inspired design with a humane price tag. One of their latest models is the MR01 where MR stands for micro-rotor. This means that the watch has automatic winding.

The watch is clearly inspired by watches from the 1940s and 1950s with its applied Breguet indices and a lovely texture on the dial. The size is also classic, the case measures 36mm and definitely suits both everyday and slightly more dressed-up settings.

The price tag for the Baltic MR01 is around 7,000kr and it is available in three different colours: salmon-coloured, silver and blue.

Casio G-Shock GA-2100

This watch which also goes by the name ”CasiOak” has become something of a modern classic. A robust watch from Casio with influences from Audemars Piguet's masterpiece Royal Oak.

This is a watch that takes rough handling and suits the person who wants a tough watch for every day without having to care about scratches and the like. The model is available in a range of different colours and versions, we have chosen the classic black one with white indices and hands.

The recommended price for the CasiOak is 1,298kr.

Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm

Hamilton is another popular brand that makes well-built watches for a humane amount of money.

One of our favourites is the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical in the size 38mm. There are a range of different versions, sizes and case materials in the Khaki Field family so here it is really just to pick and choose.

The watch is faithful to the original edition that was launched in the 1960s and was a military watch.

The price tag for this version is around 5,000kr and you can read more about the watch at Hamilton.

Timex Q Reissue 1979

The classic American brand Timex released a relaunch of their classic Q Timex from 1979.

The watch and the bracelet are in stainless steel and the bezel is blue and red, so called ”Pepsi”.

The model is made in a range of different sizes and executions, from quartz to automatic and is also available as a GMT among other things.

The price tag for the Timex Q Reissue 1979 is 1,799kr and you can read more about the model here

Furlan Marri Castagna

Furlan Marri is like Baltic a micro manufacturer that also focuses on classic design and that has received enormously positive feedback from customers and industry people. They have made a mechaquartz chronograph (the movement is driven by a battery while the chronograph module is mechanical) that is heavily inspired by Patek Philippe's legendary chronograph ref. 1463 ”Tasti Tondi”.

The editorial staff has personal experience of the brand and the quality and the finish are really good for the price tag (which is about 7,000kr after you have paid the import fees).

CWC Divers Watch

CWC (Cabot Watch Company) has been making watches for the British military since 1972. A 45mm large, robust diver's watch that is water resistant down to 300m. A watch with attitude!

CWC offers quite a few different models and executions, quartz and automatic. The price tag for the model below (quartz) is about 500 British pounds.

The whole range of CWC watches can be found on their website.
