The Timeline: News from TAG Heuer, A. Lange & Söhne and Jaeger-LeCoultre

This week's Timeline moves from motorsport to classic German watchmaking and on to the absolute peak of mechanical complication. TAG Heuer makes the Carrera Chronograph Sport smaller and more wearable, A. Lange & Söhne scales down its elegant 1815 Up/Down and Jaeger-LeCoultre shows what happens when essentially all of high watchmaking is pressed into one and the same watch.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Sport 42 mm

TAG Heuer continues to develop the Carrera family and this time it is the sportier Carrera Chronograph Sport that is up next. The model was introduced in its modern form in 2020 with a substantial 44 mm case, a ceramic tachymeter scale and a clear link to the brand's racing heritage. Six years later, TAG Heuer has above all worked on the proportions.

The case shrinks from 44 to 42 mm, while the thickness decreases from 15,48 to 14,17 mm. The lug-to-lug length has also decreased somewhat, which taken together ought to make quite a big difference on the wrist. It is still a pronounced sports chronograph, but no longer quite as massive.

The design has also been given a clear update. The tachymeter bezel combines steel with a ceramic insert and comes in black, blue or green. Most eye-catching are perhaps the dials, where TAG Heuer replaces the previous baton indexes with Arabic minute markers. The layout is still a classic tricompax with a 30-minute counter at three o'clock, a 12-hour counter at nine o'clock and running seconds plus date at six o'clock.

Four executions are offered: black, blue, green and silver. The black version in particular reinforces the racing feel with red details, while the blue and green options get matching ceramic bezel inserts.

Inside sits the manufacture calibre TH20-00, an automatic integrated chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. The movement runs at 4 Hz and offers 80 hours of power reserve. Water resistance is 100 metres.

The new Carrera Chronograph Sport goes on sale in September 2026. The price is 6 550 euro on a steel bracelet, while the blue version on a leather strap costs 6 350 euro.

A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Up/Down

m TAG Heuer reduces the Carrera for better wearability, A. Lange & Söhne does roughly the same thing – but from a completely different starting point.

The 1815 Up/Down is one of the most classically Lange-scented models in the range. The name 1815 refers to Ferdinand Adolph Lange's year of birth and the whole collection draws clear visual references from the brand's historical pocket watches.

The Up/Down function also has deep historical roots. As early as 1879, A. Lange & Söhne was granted a patent for a construction that made it possible to see whether a pocket watch was wound or about to stop. On today's model the power reserve is shown through the characteristic AUF/AB indicator on the dial.

The two new versions come in white gold and rose gold respectively and measure only 37,5 mm in diameter and 8,7 mm in height. That is smaller than the previous 39 mm version and feels entirely right in a time when classic watches are once again allowed to take up less space on the wrist.

Both get a deep blue dial with white Arabic numerals and two symmetrical subdials. The power reserve is shown at eight o'clock while the small seconds sits opposite. When the energy starts to run out, the hand reaches the classic red AB field.

On the back there is of course much of what makes Lange special. The manual calibre L051.2 has a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, gold chatons with blued screws and a hand-engraved balance cock. The movement consists of 245 parts and delivers 72 hours of power reserve.

Both models are limited to 300 examples each. No official price is stated.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Grande Complication à Grande Sonnerie

And then we come to something completely different.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Grande Complication à Grande Sonnerie is not just another expensive complication watch. This is the kind of project that reminds you why Jaeger-LeCoultre can still be described as "the watchmaker's watchmaker".

At the centre is the manual calibre 182, a movement with over 1 300 components and 15 complications. Assembling and regulating a single movement requires, according to Jaeger-LeCoultre, around a year of work and more than 16 000 separate operations.

The list of functions is close to absurd. There is a Grande Sonnerie that automatically strikes the hours and quarters, Petite Sonnerie, minute repeater, perpetual calendar and flying tourbillon. The Grande Sonnerie system uses four hammers and four gongs to play a Westminster melody.

The new model builds further on calibre 182 that was originally presented in 2009, but Jaeger-LeCoultre has worked extensively with above all the sound. The gongs have been reworked and an inner construction in titanium works as a resonance chamber to amplify and refine the tone.

The Duometre principle is particularly important in a watch like this. Two main barrels separate the energy for the timekeeping from the very energy-demanding striking functions, while a third is used for parts of the sonnerie and minute repeater mechanism. Two separate power reserve indicators show how much energy remains.

The watch measures 45 mm and combines rose gold with titanium. The open dial exposes large parts of the mechanics and makes no attempt to hide how complicated the construction actually is.

And perhaps the most fitting of all: the Duometre Grande Complication à Grande Sonnerie is a pièce unique – only one example is made.

In other words, it is hardly a watch most of us will ever wear. But as a demonstration of what mechanical watchmaking can still achieve it is all the more relevant.
