10 favourites from Richard Mille – exclusive world-class watch art

Richard Mille is not just a watch brand, it is a phenomenon. In just over two decades the Swiss house has revolutionised watchmaking, and that with futuristic design, materials taken from the space industry and a philosophy that combines the world of sport with the highest technical precision. Here we list ten of our absolute favourites from Richard Mille's groundbreaking collection, models that in different ways define the brand's unique heritage and vision of the future.

Richard Mille.

When Richard Mille launched his first watch in 2001 it was like pulling the rug out from under the whole tradition-laden Swiss watch industry. The founder, with a background in both watchmaking and the business world, wanted to create something nobody had seen before: watches that combined hypermodern materials, technical innovation and an aesthetic taken from the race track and the aviation industry. "Racing machines on the wrist" became the motto and it quickly became clear that Mille was serious. Titanium, carbon fibre, sapphire and even materials developed for Formula 1 cars started to show up in their constructions. The result: watches that were lighter, stronger and more technically advanced than most of what had previously been seen on the market.

Today Richard Mille is regarded as one of the most exclusive and sought-after brands in the luxury world. At the same time it is also one of the most polarising, loved by collectors and sports stars, but sometimes questioned for its breathtaking price tags. But one thing is certain: Richard Mille leaves nobody unmoved.

Our 10 favourites from Richard Mille

1. RM 001 Tourbillon (2001)

The very first Richard Mille watch set the tone for everything that would follow. A tourbillon in titanium, with a case that broke radically with the classic design language. It was a watch that signalled: here is a new player who does not intend to follow old rules.

2. RM 011 Felipe Massa Flyback Chronograph

The collaboration with Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa was decisive in anchoring the brand's racing DNA. The RM 011 is not just a chronograph, it is a technical statement, built to withstand extreme strain on the track. The combination of flyback function and sporty design makes it one of the brand's most loved models.

3. RM 027 Rafael Nadal (2010)

When Rafael Nadal stepped onto the tennis court with a Richard Mille on his wrist the watch world shook. A tourbillon that weighs barely 20 grams and that can stay on during intense matches? That was previously unthinkable. The RM 027 symbolises the brand's philosophy in its purest form: extreme lightness and uncompromising functionality.

4. RM 50-03 McLaren F1 (2017)

The collaboration with McLaren resulted in a technical feat: the world's lightest mechanical chronograph, only 40 grams including the strap. Made in Graph TPT – a material stronger than steel but considerably lighter. It is not a watch for everyone, but a perfect example of how far Richard Mille is willing to push the limits.

5. RM 56-02 Sapphire (2014)

Transparency on a whole new level. With a case made entirely in sapphire the RM 56-02 offers a unique view into the heart of the movement. Working this ultra-hard material is an enormous challenge, but the result is one of the most spectacular Richard Mille models ever.

6. RM 67-01 Extra Flat

Not all Richard Mille models are massive sports watches. The RM 67-01 shows the brand's more sophisticated side. The ultra-thin profile makes it elegant enough for a suit, but with a design language and technical details that immediately reveal its origin.

7. RM 11-03 Automatic Chronograph

One of the brand's real big sellers. The RM 11-03 builds on the success of the RM 011 but in a more modern and sculpted form. The chronograph is as popular among collectors as among celebrities, a classic in the true sense of the word.

8. RM 71-01 Automatic Tourbillon Talisman

When Richard Mille aims at women they do it in their own way. The RM 71-01 is as much art as technology, with a tourbillon and details that flirt with haute joaillerie. A model that shows that sportiness and elegance do not have to exclude each other.

RM71-01

9.RM 65-01 Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph
This is the brand's most advanced chronograph so far – a rattrapante that makes it possible to measure intermediate times with extreme precision. Built to withstand the strains of everyday life despite its complexity, which makes it a favourite among those who want both technical finesse and practical usability.

RM65-01

10. RM 88 Automatic Tourbillon Smiley (2022)

Playfulness in haute horlogerie is rare, but Richard Mille dares. The RM 88 is adorned with a colourful smiley and a string of humorous details – but behind the playful facade hides a high-tech tourbillon. Proof that even luxury can have a twinkle in its eye.

A heritage of courage and innovation

Richard Mille is still a young brand compared to giants like Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. But in a short time they have managed to create something many of their competitors never dared: a completely new category within luxury watches.

The ten watches we have picked out reflect the brand's many-faceted identity – from the pioneering spirit of the RM 001 to the playful irony of the RM 88. Common to them all is an uncompromising attitude to innovation and a will to constantly push at what a watch can be.

Owning a Richard Mille is for most people an unattainable dream, but following the brand's journey is to witness a living story about courage, vision and technological brilliance. And perhaps that is precisely why Richard Mille has become one of our time's most fascinating watch phenomena.
